Washing & Product Care
Bio-Sleep Concept
- PROTECT your mattress or futon from stains and mildew with a washable mattress cover or pad. All products must be free of stains and damage to qualify for our manufactures warranty.
- KEEP your new mattress or futon at least 3 inches off the floor on a slated frame to allow adequate air flow and discourage mildew. Mattresses and futons placed on platform beds or the ground that does not allow air flow through the bottom should be stood up on their side each morning.
- BRING your futon and other bedding made with natural fibers outside to bask in the sun. Seasonal sunning and airing rejuvenates the loft, sterilizes wool and cotton, and prolongs the life of your all natural products. Airing also helps remove any odors trapped in your products because of packaging.
- CLEAN any spills immediately with hydrogen peroxide or baking soda using a very absorbent sponge. If you smell a sweet earthy smell when cleaning this assures you that your product is truly all natural and contains no chemicals.
- FLIP and rotate your mattress or futon once a week for the first month you own it to insure an evenly distributed compression. You should continue to flip and/or rotate your mattress or futon monthly at best or at least seasonally at a minimum. In your first few weeks of use you will notice the development if a body signature which is a normal occurrence and indicates the cotton or wool layers are conforming to the contours of your body. Mattresses and futons made with natural fibers like cotton and wool will compress and become firmer over time and depending on individual sleeping patterns.
Earthsake
- Alternate turning mattress from end to end and flipping mattress side to side every 2 weeks for the first 2 months. Turn once every 4-6 months thereafter.
- Vacuum and Air – vacuum and/or air regularly which helps the natural fibers breathe.
- Stains – Are best removed by simple spot cleaning. Apply a solution of 1:3 parts white distilled vinegar and water (you may also use a natural detergent to spot clean). Spray the solution on the spot, then allow to dry completely. If possible, moving the mattress into the sun to dry is most advantageous.
- To insure proper ventilation always support mattress/foundation with a proper support system. Ideal support systems are boxsprings or slat systems. If you are placing mattress on plywood or solid surface, it is advisable that the surface be perforated for proper airflow. King/CA-King size bed-frames should have a center support system. Do not place mattress or foundation directly on the floor or on/in damp locations.
- Do not use the handles when flipping or lifting mattress --handles are designed to guide the mattress into place after flipping. They cannot support the mattress’s weight and will detach if you try to lift the mattress with them.

Ogallala Comfort
Down has natural enemies. For instance, the humidity in your house, lotions, hair conditioners and the perspiration from your body all weigh down the filaments in down. If your pillow or comforter seems to be going flat, clumping, and/or separating, it is most likely moisture or oil robbing it of its original loft.
Laundering the product should adequately clean it and bring back its original fluffiness; however, this is not a guarantee.
DO NOT DRY CLEAN. The chemicals used actually break down the composition of down fiber. The more you clean your product, the more you will actually cause breakdown of the natural product. Therefore, spot cleaning is the best practice for cleaning down products. When professional laundering is needed to keep your Ogallala product luxurious, we recommend Blanc Plume French Laundry +1-800-307-0229 for guaranteed cleaning results.
The At-Home Laundering Instructions
The “do-it-yourself” laundering approach is at your own risk and does void any warranty coverage.
We would highly recommend to leave the laundering to the professionals! However, if you are feeling brave, here’s how:
- Use a large capacity front-loading washing machine. DO NOT use a top-loading washing machine.
- Detergent must be an approved down-wash, such as Down Wash (by Le Blanc), or Dreft. DO NOT use Woolite.
- Washing machine settings should be on cold water, and cycle should be DELICATE or HAND WASH.
- After the first cycle is complete, run the cycle again without detergent to ensure all of the soap is removed.
- Dry in a large capacity dryer at medium heat for a minimum of 6-8 hours, checking every 30 minutes to pull apart down clumps. When you think your comforter or pillow is dry, put it back into the dryer for one or two more cycles. Yes – you just read that right! DO NOT attempt to air dry since it will not dry quickly enough and will cause mildew.
Mulberry West
Easy to Clean: Simply air out in the sunshine for a few hours, allowing nature to naturally whiten the cotton shell and rejuvenate the silk filling. For soiling, spot clean the cotton shell. For heavier soiling, dry clean with LOW heat. Do not machine wash or dry as this will shrink the silk filling.

Soaring Heart
Always use a 100% natural fiber mattress pad
- All Soaring Heart organic mattresses, organic futons, and organic shikibutons, require the use of a Organic Cotton Mattress Pad. The average person loses about a pint of moisture a night. Mattress pads absorb body oils and moister, preventing them from soaking into your mattress. One of our protective and washable mattress pads will double the life of your mattress, keeping it clean and dry for years to come.
- Our 100% cotton mattress pads are absorbent and sturdy enough to last you for years while our Organic Wool Mattress Pads have the unique ability to absorb and disperse water vapor, wicking it away from the body while actively repelling liquid, so your bed will be doubly protected.
- For use in cribs, toddlers' beds, for people with pets who sleep on the bed, or for customers who enjoy eating in bed, we recommend using both an organic wool mattress pad and a cotton mattress pad to protect against accidents. The cotton absorbs the spill as the wool repels what passes through.
- Wash your mattress pad every other week or whenever you wash your sheets.
- All mattresses, even the newer "no flip" mattresses, do in fact, need to be flipped. Flipping a mattress increases its lifespan and sustains its comfort. If a mattress is never flipped, the area of the bed where you sleep will compress and form body impressions over time. When not flipped, a mattress that is supposed to last for 20 years will only be comfortable for 5-10.
- This is the reason we are so against mattresses with sewn on mattress toppers or pillow tops. A mattress topper needs to be flipped even more than a standard mattress due to its soft fibers and materials (which makes them less resistant to compression). Often when people have a mattress that is no longer comfortable, it is because the top layer has compressed; the actual mattress is still perfectly fine.
Mattress Toppers
- Flip your mattress topper every other week or whenever you change your sheets. This will allow it to wear evenly and resist body impressions.
Organic Latex Mattress
- The latex portion of your mattress, what we at Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company refer to as the "support layer", is very resilient and long lasting. Latex doesn't compress as fibers do, so there is little reason to worry about body impressions. Because of this, your latex support only needs to be flipped and rotated every six months to allow the cotton ticking underneath your mattress topper to have equal time exposed to air.
Organic Innerspring Mattresses
- Innerspring mattresses need to be flipped once a month. Steel springs compress very slowly, but over time and with constant use, the springs will lose some of their resistance. Flip your mattress so that it can wear evenly.
- To make sure your organic futon or shikibuton wears evenly, flip and rotate your bed once every week to two weeks. This will discourage body impressions and increase the life of your mattress.
- Put your organic futon or shikibuton in the sun once or twice a year. Sunlight does an amazing job of reinvigorating the cotton and wool in a natural bed - wool especially regains a lot of springiness when it sits in the sun - as well as killing dust mites and mildew spores. Put your futon out on a sunny day with as much air circulating around it as possible (suspended over several chairs, on a hammock, or on a picnic table). Never leave your futon out overnight.
- We've said this before, but it's worth mentioning again: do not put your futon directly on the floor for extended periods of time. Even if you don't see mildew or mold forming, it can be happening inside the mattress. Moisture exposure also accelerates compaction, reducing the lifespan of your organic futon or organic shikibuton.
Spot Cleaning/Sanitizing Accidents
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Sometimes accidents happen. When the unforeseen occurs, the best thing to do is spot clean the case with water and mild detergent. Then liberally saturate the soiled area with rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry. The alcohol will sanitize the area, and it will help evaporate the spill faster than it can penetrate the mattress.
About Mold and Mildew
Unfortunately, once mold or mildew is present, it's often too late to fix. However; if there's just a trace of mildew or mold starting to appear, there are several steps you can take to try to save your bed.
- Mold and mildew — mold, in particular — has the potential to cause a number of health problems and can affect each person differently. Allergic reactions are most common, but mold can also cause asthma attacks and severe illness in sensitive individuals.
- Mold or mildew can grow in a bed if that bed does not have proper aeration, thus leading to moisture accumulation. To make sure your mattress is properly aerated, keep mattress on a slatted frame or foundation. Slats allow air to flow underneath the mattress, reducing condensation and allowing any moisture to evaporate. Using a Soaring Heart Mattress Pad will also reduce any moisture buildup.

White Lotus Home
Care and Cleaning: Mattresses
- We recommend flipping your White Lotus Home mattresses regularly to ensure even wear. Slatted surfaces are recommended, as they allow air to circulate, and should be flipped every 3 months or at the change of seasons. On a solid surface or box spring, we recommend flipping the mattress every few weeks. Airing out the mattress will also refresh the fibers.
- We recommend spot cleaning your White Lotus Home mattress with a solution of 3 parts water to one part vinegar. Spray the solution onto the stain and expose to sunlight. Let dry and repeat until the stain fades and odors dissipate. You can also substitute vinegar with a mild laundry detergent. For surface stains, hydrogen peroxide works well for blood, whereas rubbing alcohol can help to remove oils from cosmetics. White Lotus Home always recommends using a removable mattress pad to prevent spills and stains.
- Mattresses and pillows should not remain damp, as it may contribute to uneven wear or mold growth. Following a spill or cleaning, dry any moisture by placing the mattress in the sun or by using a hair dryer. Ensure the mattress is fully dry before re-adding a mattress pad or protective cover, such as our Organic Barrier Cloth Covers.
- Please note that these suggestions are at your own risk. Results may vary.
Care and Cleaning: Pillows, Duvets, and Bedding
- As they are raw, minimally processed fibers, our products cannot be completely submerged in water without damaging the fibers within. This includes pillows and duvets.
- We recommend spot cleaning your White Lotus Home pillows, duvets, and bedding with a solution of 3 parts water to one part vinegar.
- Bedding should not remain damp, as it may encourage uneven wear or mold growth. Following a spill or cleaning, dry any moisture by placing the item in the sun or by using a hair dryer. Ensure it is fully dry before re-adding sheets or protective covers, such as our Organic Barrier Cloth Covers.
- Please note that these suggestions are at your own risk. Results may vary.
Refreshing Pillows & Duvets
- Some fibers, particularly kapok, can absorb the natural oils that keep our face and skin healthy. To restore loft and fluffiness, pillows may be placed in the dryer on the "Cold Air/ Fluff" setting for 15 to 20 minutes. Specially-designed wool dryer balls or clean tennis balls can aid in fluffing the inner fibers. To prevent any damage to the inner fibers, never use a heated setting.
Refreshing Wool Bedding
- Wool bedding, such as duvets and toppers, occasionally require special care. We recommend exposing it to direct sunlight and air once a month --- sunlight works as a natural sanitizer. If you prefer to send them to the cleaners, use a dry-cleaning process only. Never submerge wool bedding in water or place it in the washing machine, as this can cause irreversible felting of the wool.
Cleaning Sheets & Covers
- Sheets and covers may be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle and dried on low, though line drying is preferable.
Cleaning Cotton Belle Covers
- For Cotton Belle Covers , please consult this chart for fiber content and care instructions specific to your fabric. Any fabric marked with a * is machine washable on the gentle cycle. Line drying is preferred.
Cleaning Coyuchi Blankets & Sheets
- All of Coyuchi's cotton and linen products are machine washable. For whites and light colors: We recommend machine washing on the gentle or delicate cycle with warm water and non-phosphate soap. For dark colors: We recommend machine washing on gentle or delicate cycle with cold water and non-phosphate soap. Line dry, or tumble dry low and remove promptly. Use a warm iron on cotton, or a hot iron on linen, as needed. We do not recommend using whiteners as bleaching agents may diminish the brilliance and depth of the colors; when needed, use only non-chlorine bleach. Please refer to the product tag for more specific instructions. Place a set of our wool dryer balls inside the dryer to naturally soften the fabric and reduce drying time.
Cleaning Coyuchi Organic Cotton Mattress Pads
- All Coyuchi organic cotton mattress pads are machine washable. We recommend machine washing on the gentle or delicate cycle with like colors, with cold water and a natural, plant based laundry detergent. We do not recommend using whiteners, as bleaching agents may diminish the brilliance and depth of the colors; when needed, use only non-chlorine bleach. Line dry, or tumble dry low and remove promptly. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets reduce the absorbency of cotton textiles and are not recommended. Place a set of wool dryer balls inside the dryer to naturally soften the fabric and reduce drying time. Use a warm iron as needed.

What do I do when I receive my new bedding?
You may be excited to go straight to sleep on your new bedding, but it's best to air out your mattress or bedding after removing all the shipping material. Because our materials don't go through harsh bleaching or other chemical processes, the finished products sometimes have a natural scent. This is normal and will dissipate after airing out. The time this takes will vary on your personal taste and environment.
How do I maintain my new mattress?
In order to get the longest usage from your new mattress, we recommend one of our mattress toppers. For regular upkeep, it's best to vacuum and air out your mattress periodically. Also, you should rotate and flip your mattress as needed (if you have a layered latex mattress, only turn, don't flip mattress.) When turning or flipping mattress, always make sure you have someone helping you when needed.
How do I wash my new bedding?
Because of the nature of our materials, you shouldn't machine wash any of our products. We recommend pillowcases and duvet covers for our pillows and comforters. If you need to spot clean your mattress or topper, we ask that you give us a call to find out about your specific product and health needs.
